What should I expect during and after an IPL treatment?
Your provider begins by applying gel to your clean skin and then treats the area with a small handpiece which emits the light onto the skin. During the procedure, you may feel a stinging sensation, often likened to a rubber band snapping against the skin. If comfort is a concern, your provider can provide numbing cream to apply before the session. Eye protection is worn to protect your eyes from the laser.
Session duration ranges from 20-60 minutes depending on the treatment area size. Throughout the procedure, wearing dark glasses is essential for eye protection.
Expect the treated area to appear pink and swollen for 4-8 hours, accompanied by a sensation similar to sunburn. Your skin will be sensitive, so refrain from using creams, makeup, or lotions for at least 24 hours, and avoid hot water until your skin begins to heal. Immediate discomfort can be alleviated with a wet cloth. After 24 hours, apply moisturizer to the treated area twice daily for the next 12 weeks.
